Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I update the software?
A: The NetSweeper Client will automatically check to see if there is a software update
available every 24 hours or when the computer is first started and connected to the
Internet. However, you can manually check for updates by selecting: Check for
Software Update option under the Tasks section on the configuration screen. If an
update is available please follow the on-screen directions in order to update your
software.

Q: Some of my privacy, anti-spam and anti-virus programs are not functioning
correctly, can I run other applications on the same machine as the NetSweeper
Client?
A: When running multiple applications simultaneously that are designed to filter or block
online access controls the issue of conflicts will almost always arise. This is not an
indication that a particular application is necessarily better than another but rather that
they might be competing for control. Therefore, if you encounter that previously installed
applications such as, C-Privacy or FlashClean for example are not working correctly, it
is recommended that you disable these applications after installing the NetSweeper
Client.

Q: When I try to install the NetSweeper Client it states that I must uninstall my
Google Desktop Search (GDS), why is this and what should I do?
A: Applications which modify your network settings in order to filter or block objectionable
Internet content, conflict with Google Desktop Search. During the initial installation
process the NetSweeper Client will browse to determine if the Google Desktop Search
(GDS) is installed on the same PC. If it is, follow these steps; Stop the NetSweeper Client installation process;
Uninstall GDS Desktop Search, reboot pc; install NetSweeper Client, then reinstall GDS.
TIP: Back up your Google Desk top index directory so that you can copy it back after
reinstalling to prevent having to re-index.

Q: I see a 'not compatible' or 'network settings' error message after installing the
NetSweeper Client when running Google Desktop, what should I do?
A: Uninstall the Google Desktop software and then reinstall it. Tip: Back up your Google
Desk top index directory so that you can copy it back after reinstalling to prevent having
to re-index.

Q: Why is my Yahoo/MSN/AIM Messenger locking up or unable to connect to the server?
A: Check to see if you have selected to Block Instant Messaging. If so, your Messenger
is attempting to connect to the server but it is unable to because it is being blocked by
the NetSweeper Client.

Q: My Outlook Express (or similar e-mail client) times out even though I can browse and am connected, what should I do?
A: Check to see if you have selected to Block E-Mail.  If this option is turned on, the e-mail client will load, all other Internet unless
otherwise selected will be open but e-mail will time out until this option is disabled.

Q: I am currently running a Firewall program that asks if I want to allow access to
wfilter.exe, what should I do?
A: You should allow access to wfilter.exe as this is the NetSweeper Client service.

URLs in this category tend to be related to discussions or material relevant to an

individuals personal life whether it is unique character or orientation. Sites in this
category may include such things as the straight mens groups, gay and lesbian
discussions, senior citizen clubs, transgender groups, vegetarianism or naturism.

-Alternative Journals

Electronic magazines included in the Alternative Journals category range from personal
"EZines" to literary and culturally oriented publications. This category does not include
electronic forms of mainstream magazines and newspapers.

Examples:
Broken Pencil - List of alternative journals
Healing Net - Directory of healing events, and resource guide to holistic medicines
Spectrum Magazine - List of various alternative journals
Sunrise Magazine - Spirituality, crystals, and aromatherapy

-Arts and Culture

Virtual art galleries and other cultural topics are contained within this category, such as
museums and cultural customs.

Examples:
Visual Jazz Art Gallery - Contemporary and fine art

-Chat

This category includes Web-based (via HTTP, not IRC) chat groups pertaining to
several subjects. Chat rooms allow people to come together on-line to chat about
current events, debate hot topics and share common interests.

-Criminal Skills

This category includes instructions or identification of methods to promote, encourage,
or provide the skills to commit illegal or criminal activities. This category includes
examples such as bomb making instructions, lock picking, computer hacking, burglary,
murder, and rape.

-Entertainment

The entertainment category includes URLs pertaining to things such as movies,
television, music, hobbies, clubs, and amusement parks. URLs can be either fan club
style (for example, the Brad Pitt fan club) or sponsored by a company (for example,
Warner Bros.). This category also includes personal pages of movies and television
shows.

-Extreme Content

The extreme category includes URLs that are often pushed to the limit in their
respective categories. These URLs are typically extremely violent, gory, or horrific in
nature and may be related to sex, bodily functions, obscenity, or perverse activities.

Pixmans' Vault of Porn Pix - Contains extreme hardcore pornography
Bizarre & Maximum Perversum - Sex site with extreme and bizarre pornography
The Butt Page - Rectal foreign body page
Chips Barazite - Child pornography, pictures of cadavers, and mutilated hands and

The gambling category contains URLs that encourage the gambling of money or other
materialistic items. It includes sites offering gaming, bookmaker odds, lottery pages,
and bingo.

-General News

The general news category applies to most online news and mainstream trade
publications, such as business and medical journals.

This category is dedicated to any sort of propaganda which would encourage the
oppression of one specific group of individuals. This category includes such things as
derogatory speech against women, visible minorities, or slander against the disabled.

-Humour Sites

The humour category includes sites that intend to be comical or funny. The sites include
general jokes, comic pages or comedy clubs.

-Illegal Drugs

URLs in this category provide information on the purchase and use of illegal or
recreational drugs.

This rapidly growing category includes anything related to a job search. It includes sites
concerned with resume writing, interviewing, careers, classified advertising, and job

opportunities.

This category is comprised of topics related to dating services and relationships. This
includes listings or personal advertisements, tips for attracting a companion, and on-line

-Online Portals

This category includes sites that provide a portal based navigation system from which
users can select a broad range of topics.

the individual only, such as the sale of clothing, accessories, appliances, or pets. This
category may also overlap into other categories such as the sale of sex merchandise,
sports memorabilia, and hate speech paraphernalia. It includes market promotions and
catalogue selling (for instance, LL Bean).

-Self Help

This category includes anything either medically, organically, or support-based, that will
improve an individuals health. This category ranges from new medications and
therapies to support groups.

Friends in Recovery - List of recovery related sites including AA world
Divorce Care - Support for divorcees
Teen Help - Provides information to help your teen on drugs

-Sex

This category contains URLs that reference, discuss, or show pornography, pictures or
videos of sex, or sexually oriented material. This will range from all discussions of sex
(including for example, sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex, and teen pregnancy),
bikini-clad women and men, nudity, soft and hard-core pornography, sadomasochism,
bestiality, and child pornography, etc...
